In the olden days before public libraries had been created it was only the rich who had access to books in Universities and private libraries on large estates. The Mercantile was founded in Cincinnati by a group of 45 young merchants who wanted to educate themselves, so they pooled their resources and bought books and subscribed to magazines and created a membership library. It has just been renovated and expanded and  “it’s like a steampunk fantasy of what a library should be” according to the author David Giffels with spiral staircase and secret door.
